Book Review by British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies:

Mardum-shinasi va Jami‘a-shinasi Yazd (“Anthropology & Sociology of the City of Yazd”) by Masoud Mirzaei and Ahmad Kalateh Sadati. Tehran: Tandis Press, 2018 .
Written in Persian with an introduction in English, Masoud Mirzaei and Kalateh Sadati’s Mardum-shinasi va Jami‘a-shinasi Yazd, looks at how the overlap of tradition and modernity impacts health and wellbeing in one of the oldest cities of Iran. In a major contribution to efforts to decolonize such studies, they are able to show that “tradition” whether “Islamic” or “local” does not necessarily mean “conservative” or “closed”, as is too often the assumption. Their study is based on a “large-scale population-based prospective cohort study” of ten thousand Yazd residents .

Mirzaei and Sadati first argue that the popular conception of “health” in Yazd owes as much to local culture, psychology, ethics and tradition as it does to modern medical notions of physical wellbeing. Then, using the latest medical, anthropological and sociological analytical methods, the authors take an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the current mental, physical and social health of Yazd’ people in light of city history, religion and culture .
